Sylvette David

Sylvette David
Date: Born 1935

Picasso first met the beautiful Sylvette David in the early summer of 1954. For a few months during that year in the south of France, Sylvette became his complete inspiration. In a typically energetic burst of creativity, Picasso produced more than 40 iconic images of the “woman with the high ponytail”, a look that was to become synonymous with the 1950’s and famously adopted by the glamorous actress Bridgit Bardot. Sylvette David was greatly inspired by Picasso and is an artist in her own right. In addition to signing the portrait of her by Picasso, there are also signed limited edition giclée prints of a watercolours by her own hand. “Looking at Sylvette” shows the youg Sylvette looking at the timeless image Picasso created of her. In “The Girl with the Key” the picture pays homage to an iron sculpture of Sylvette by Picasso where she is symbolically holding a key. The statue appears in the background on the left hand side of the work.
