JMW Turner
Date: 1775 - 1851
Born on St. Georges Day 1775, something of which he was very proud, Turner showed a remarkable artistic talent from an early age. Admitted to the Royal Acadamy schools when he was just 14, Turner's skills developed rapidly. By the time he was 21 he was already enjoying the beginnings of commercial success, famed for his sensitive and often innovative handling of watercolour and regularly exhibiting oils. As he grew older Turner developed his characteristic hazy style, described by Constable as "tinted steam", concentrating on the effects of pure light and colour. After a long and incredibly productive career.
Turner died in 1851 and was buried in St. Pauls Cathedral, London. He left a great legacy from which we all benefit today. The contents of his studio, some three hundred oil paintings and thousand upon thousand of watercolours and drawings were left to the British Nation and are now on display for all to enjoy at Tate Britain on the banks of the river Thames. This unprecedented gift serves as a permanent memorial to the greatest British landscape artist of the nineteenth century.
